Spend enough time around fragrance and eventually you will see the phrase “1:1.”
One fragrance is described as identical to another. An alternative is said to smell exactly like an original. Someone else tries the same two fragrances and disagrees completely.
So who is right?
Perhaps that is the wrong question.
Fragrance is experienced, not calculated. And when two fragrances are compared, the most useful opinion may ultimately be your own.
What does 1:1 mean in fragrance?
When people describe a fragrance as “1:1,” they are usually suggesting that it smells extremely similar to another fragrance.
It is an easy way of communicating similarity, particularly when discussing alternatives to well-known fragrances.
But it is still an opinion.
Two fragrances can share familiar notes, accords or an overall character without being identical. Differences may become apparent in the opening, as they develop on skin, or several hours into the wear.
One person may focus on everything the fragrances have in common. Another may immediately notice what separates them.
That is part of fragrance.
Similar does not have to mean identical
At EAUTRE, we do not need two fragrances to be identical for the comparison to be worthwhile.
They need a reason to belong beside one another.
That might come from their fragrance structure, notes, accords, overall character or the comparisons already being made by people who have experienced them.
From there, we narrow the research down to something we believe deserves to be experienced side by side.
Not because we have already decided which fragrance is better.
Because we think the comparison is worth making.
From 1:1 to 1-2-1
That thinking led to Fragrance 1-2-1.
The idea is deliberately simple:
One original. One considered alternative. Your comparison.
Each 1-2-1 includes an authentic original fragrance alongside one alternative selected by EAUTRE.
Both are there for you to experience on your own skin.
We do not tell you that they are identical.
We do not tell you which one should win.
We give you the comparison.
Why include the authentic original?
Because the original gives the comparison context.
Reading that another fragrance smells similar can be useful. Watching somebody compare the two can be useful too.
But neither tells you exactly how you will experience them.
With the authentic original beside the alternative, you have your own benchmark.
Wear one on each arm. Experience the opening. Give them time to develop. Return to them later.
You might notice similarities immediately.
You might notice differences.
Your opinion might even change between the first wear and the fifth.
That is precisely the point.
The alternative does not have to win
A successful comparison does not require you to prefer the alternative.
You might finish a 1-2-1 convinced that the original is worth every penny.
You might discover that you prefer the alternative.
Or you might realise that neither fragrance is quite right for you.
All three outcomes tell you something useful.
The purpose of comparison is not to manufacture a winner. It is to give you more information before you make a bigger decision.
Compare one fragrance to another one.
There are countless fragrance opinions online.
Some are informed. Some are useful. Some contradict each other completely, because apparently even smelling nice required humanity to develop factions.
EAUTRE takes a different approach.
We research the comparison.
We select what we believe deserves to be experienced together.
Then we step out of the conclusion.
Compare one fragrance to another one.
See where they meet.
Notice where they differ.
Decide what works for you.
Explore Fragrance 1-2-1 and choose your comparison.
Because everyone has an opinion.
Trust your own.
Wear. Compare. Discover. Decide.
